You can verify this yourself in thirty seconds on any company site you like.

You’ll find something specific. The words are fine. Nothing is grammatically wrong. Every paragraph is roughly the same length, every list has exactly three items, and every claim sits at the same middle altitude of importance. Somewhere there’s a sentence about being not just a product but a partner. And the whole thing could describe four hundred other companies if you swapped the name.

That last part is the actual problem, and it’s the one almost nobody edits for. Most advice on how to edit AI copy stops at the vocabulary: delete “delve,” kill “leverage,” ban “tapestry.” Do all of that and you’ll still have text that reads as machine-made, because you removed the fingerprints and left the body.

There are three layers to this, and they’re in ascending order of difficulty and effectiveness. Most people do the first one and stop.

Layer 1: strip the vocabulary (necessary, insufficient)

Start here because it’s fast and it does matter. Certain words now function as a signature, and a reader who spends any time online recognizes them instantly.

The core list: delve, leverage, robust, seamless, tapestry, testament, landscape, realm, navigate, elevate, unlock, harness, foster, underscore, pivotal, crucial, vibrant.

Then the constructions, which are worse than the words because they’re harder to notice:

❌ It’s not just a tool, but a complete workflow solution.
✅ It handles the whole workflow, not one piece of it.

❌ This approach plays a crucial role in driving meaningful outcomes.
✅ This approach cuts the review cycle from two weeks to three days.

❌ In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, businesses must adapt.
✅ Most teams I see are still running this process manually.

Notice what changed in the third pair. I didn’t just remove “landscape.” I replaced an empty universal claim with a specific observation. Hold that thought, because it’s the whole post.

Strip the signposting too. “In this section, we’ll explore” and “It’s worth noting that” and “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” are scaffolding the model leaves behind. A human writer transitions by changing subject, not by announcing it.

This layer takes about ten minutes with find-and-replace. It’s necessary. It fixes almost nothing on its own.

Layer 2: break the uniformity

The second tell is structural, and readers feel it without being able to name it.

AI output is relentlessly even. Paragraphs run three to four sentences each, every time. Sentences cluster around eighteen to twenty-two words. Lists arrive in threes because the model has absorbed the rhetorical rule of three from everything ever written. Sections come out the same length whether they deserve it or not.

Human writing is lumpy. A paragraph can be one sentence. A list can have two items, or seven. One section runs long because the writer had more to say there, and the next is short because they didn’t.

So break it deliberately:

❌ Five paragraphs, each four sentences, each around 80 words.
✅ One paragraph of six sentences, then one of two, then a single line on its own.

Do the same at sentence level. After anything over twenty words, write one under eight. This is mechanical enough to apply without judgment, and it’s the fastest structural improvement available, which I went into properly in sentence length and non-native writing.

Also break the threes. When you see a list of exactly three parallel items, ask whether there were really three, or whether the model rounded to a pleasing number. Usually there were two that matter and one filler.

This layer gets you noticeably closer. It’s still not enough.

Layer 3: add what only you know

Here’s the thing the first two layers can’t fix.

A language model writes the average of everything ever written about a topic. That’s not a flaw in the model, it’s what the model is. So its output is competent, plausible, and by definition unoriginal, because the average of everything contains nothing specific to anyone.

Which means the real tell isn’t vocabulary or rhythm. It’s that nothing in the draft could only have come from you.

The fix is to put something in that the model couldn’t have. Not more words. Different words, carrying information that exists only in your head or your files.

❌ Many non-native writers struggle with prepositions because they differ between languages.
✅ The preposition errors I see most in copy from Chinese and German teams are opposite: one group drops articles entirely, the other over-applies them.

❌ Client feedback can sometimes be difficult to navigate.
✅ A client once sent me a detector screenshot at 8:22 PM saying my article was 85% AI. I wrote every word of it.

❌ Pricing models each have their advantages and disadvantages.
✅ Hourly pricing punished me for getting faster. The better I got, the less I earned for the same job.

Every ✅ version contains something a model cannot generate: a specific pattern from real observation, a timestamped event, a conclusion someone reached the hard way. That’s what human writing is. Not better vocabulary, but proprietary information.

This is also why it’s harder. Layer 1 is find-and-replace. Layer 3 requires you to actually have something to say, and if the draft has nothing specific in it, no amount of editing creates that. Sometimes the honest answer is that the piece shouldn’t exist, or that you need to go do the research before you write it.

The Only-You Test

Here’s how to check your work in under a minute.

Read each paragraph and ask: could anyone in my field have written this exact paragraph? If yes, it’s still AI copy, regardless of how many words you swapped.

Apply it ruthlessly to your openings and closings, which are where generic writing concentrates. Most AI-drafted pieces open with a universal claim about the industry and close with a summary of what they just said. Both are replaceable by anyone. Both should be the first things you rewrite.

A piece doesn’t need to pass the test in every sentence. Transitions and explanations can be ordinary. But if an entire section passes without a single sentence only you could have written, that section is doing no work for you, and a reader senses it even if they can’t articulate why.

The honest limit

Two things this method can’t do.

It won’t reliably beat AI detectors, and I’d be careful with anyone who promises that. Detectors flag predictability, and predictability correlates with the patterns above but isn’t identical to them. Careful human writing gets flagged too, which is a problem I’ve documented with the actual data in the false positive problem. Edit for readers, not for detectors. The score is not the goal.

And it can’t manufacture expertise you don’t have. If your draft has no specifics because you don’t know any, editing won’t produce them. That’s a research problem wearing an editing problem’s clothes, and the fix happens before the draft, not after.

What this method does do is stop competent-but-forgettable text from going out under your name. For a non-native writer that matters twice over, because generic AI-flavored English is exactly what people expect when they doubt your language, and specific, concrete writing is the fastest thing that disproves them.

Strip the words. Break the rhythm. Then put yourself in it. The last one is the only one that’s actually hard, and it’s the only one that works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I edit AI copy so it sounds human?
Work in three layers. First remove the vocabulary and constructions that function as AI signatures, such as delve, leverage, seamless, and the “not just X, but Y” pattern. Second, break the structural uniformity by varying paragraph and sentence length and avoiding lists that always come in threes. Third, and most important, add specific information only you could supply: real numbers, observed patterns, concrete events.

Why does AI writing still sound generic after I remove the obvious words?
Because vocabulary is the surface tell, not the real one. A language model produces the average of what has been written about a topic, so its output contains nothing specific to any individual. Removing flagged words leaves text that is still replaceable by anyone. The fix is adding proprietary detail, not swapping synonyms.

What is the fastest way to tell if my edited draft still reads as AI?
Apply the only-you test. Read each paragraph and ask whether anyone else in your field could have written that exact paragraph. If the answer is yes, it still reads as machine-made no matter how much you rewrote. Openings and closings fail this test most often.

Will editing AI copy this way stop AI detectors flagging it?
Not reliably, and you should be cautious about advice that promises it will. Detectors measure predictability, which overlaps with these patterns but is not the same thing, and careful human writing is frequently flagged too. Edit for readers rather than for a score.

Can this method fix a draft with no real substance in it?
No. If a draft contains no specifics because the underlying research was never done, editing cannot create them. That is a research problem rather than an editing one, and it has to be solved before writing rather than after.

Where to go next

👉🏼 For the editing method for your own writing, see the two-pass edit.

👉🏼 For prompts that produce better AI output in the first place, see 15 ChatGPT prompts for non-native writers.

👉🏼 For the rhythm problem in layer two, see sentence length and non-native writing.

👉🏼 For why detector scores are the wrong target, see the false positive problem.

Strip the words.
